Well we went to Moutain Equipment Co-op (MEC for those in know) and unloaded the credit card to get some essentials... new pack for Shan with a detachable travel bag along with another travel bag, rain jackets, hiking shoes, money belts and some other nick nacks... having the gear really helps but it always seems like you need more... oh the fun of being a gear-head. Thank goodness my Europe Bound back pack cicra 1994 is still in one piece with many other pieces of tread having been added through the years of use. It is funny how we have an attachment to inanimate objects (my pack has been out West numerous times, East Coast, Japan, Nashville, Thailand, Cambodia, Europe leaving me behind, and numerous car camping adventures.
With all our gear assembled there was that dire need for purchasing some Lonely Planet Guides... as you travel you can always spot the newbs sitting in a cafe reading the Lonely Planet... my favorite of the travel books by far... nice pictures to get you an idea of where your going, lots of maps of off-shoot placed that are detailed enough to get you from being lost to found. As well they have all the good information of what is good, what to avoid, typical costs, suggestions and more recently more green or eco centric artilces and descriptions which is always a plus as I have always said "Leave the campsite in a better condition than we found it" or "Take nothing but photos and Leave nothing but memores" or something like that... so we bought the Central America on a Shoestring, Costa Rica (as we are planning on spending a lot of time there), Latin Spanish Phrase Book, and Peru. The good thing is being prepared the bad thing... having to carry around books on your back... we are sure they will all come in handy.
Now in typical Shan and Scott fashion we are doing our vaccines last minute... just made the appointment today for Friday and thankfully a lot of the "required or suggested"ones we have already Hep A, Hep B, Typhoid, Japanese E. Now we have to get Yellow Fever, Twinrex top up and those dreaded pills for Malaria... yep there is no vaccine and there are a variety of pills with varying side-effects... I could not stand these in Thailand and am not looking forward to taking them in C and S America.
Till next time.
